The jazz trio – pianist, double bass player, drummer –, one of the most classical bands in this genre of music, is currently living a unique revival. Emerging from this landscape in this period is very difficult. Tingvall Trio – Martin Tingvall, Omar Rodriguez Calvo, Jürgen Spiegel: a Swedish, a Cuban and a German musician who chose Hamburg as their home base – emerges from the wide offer of the music market, as the high consensus of the audience and of the critics testify. They They held concerts in more than 30 countries, getting great awards such as ECHO Jazz in the categories ‘Ensemble of the Year’ and ‘Live Act of the Year’. In their town, they have been invited to ‘test’ the special acoustic of the Elbphilharmonie, a futuristic concert hall recently opened
Their latest album was released in august 2017 and its title is Cirklar. The pianist and leader of the group, Martin Tingvall, says: “Songs are a starting point for us. With this album I tried to compose in a way that could show us new directions. We are searching for new expression ways, but at the same time we want to be recognized as Tingvall Trio. This time the cornerstone is the music, not the trio. Every tune is a challenge, a game, a drama that turns in circle until it ends”. One of the tunes is called Bumerang: a track that starts with a strong session of drums, followed by a melodic episode repeatedly directed towards the listener, just like a wave moves towards the shore. “Sometimes the perception of time is contradictory – Tingvall says – my parents’ generation is growing old, the time passing for them has a completely different rhythm from my time. Excitement makes my life almost surreal, compared to theirs.” A concept that has been expressed in Evighetsmaskinen. Very far from the trio style, this tune is made of meditative sounds and sort of dilated rhythms.
